Assassin’s Creed Infinity Evolves: Animus Hub Unveiled, But Questions Remain

The future of Assassin’s Creed took a surprising turn this week with Ubisoft officially renaming its previously announced “Assassin’s Creed Infinity” to “Animus Hub.” While the new name sheds some light on the platform’s purpose, key details regarding its functionality remain shrouded in secrecy.

Back in September 2022, Ubisoft unveiled a bold vision for the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Alongside the codenames for the next two mainline games, Red (now revealed as Assassin’s Creed Shadows) and Hexe, came the announcement of Assassin’s Creed Infinity. This ambitious project was described as a “massive online platform that evolves over time” and a central hub that would connect future Assassin’s Creed experiences.

However, Ubisoft’s messaging surrounding Infinity has been somewhat ambiguous. The platform was initially positioned as a launcher app, offering players a single entry point for both standalone and potentially multiplayer experiences within the Assassin’s Creed universe. At the same time, Ubisoft hinted that Infinity would also somehow continue the ongoing narrative thread of the series’ modern-day storyline.

This presented a confusing picture. How could a launcher app simultaneously house standalone games and progress a complex, overarching narrative? Fans were left scratching their heads, eager for more information.

The recent name change to Animus Hub might offer a clue. The “Animus,” of course, is the fictional device used in Assassin’s Creed games that allows players to relive the genetic memories of their ancestors. This new name suggests a deeper integration with the series’ lore, potentially positioning the Animus Hub as a narrative tool within the established universe.

However, Ubisoft is still playing its cards close to its chest. While a senior official confirmed the name change, details about the Animus Hub’s actual functionality remain scarce. Will it be a social space for players to connect between games? How will it handle the modern-day narrative? Will it offer exclusive content or experiences? These questions remain unanswered.

Despite the lack of concrete information, the existence of the Animus Hub hints at a significant evolution for Assassin’s Creed. Ubisoft appears committed to a more interconnected future for the franchise, one that seamlessly blends standalone narratives with a persistent, overarching story. Whether the Animus Hub proves to be a revolutionary step forward or a confusing detour remains to be seen. One thing is certain: fans will be watching closely for further details as Ubisoft unveils the true potential of its ambitious new platform.
